So unfortunately, I am stuck with it because it would cost me more than I paid for it to return it. I purchased this item not knowing that it was not compatible with the 4th Generation Ipod. The description was unclear, I hope no one else makes the same mistake I did. So I am just going to throw it in the trash. Lesson learned.
It worked well for about two years (of very light use) and then the connector just crumbled into pieces. For an item that typically sells for $20, this isn't the sort of quality one should expect. I would look elsewhere.
What I did was just burnt out my two 12v fuses. Not sure if my item was an isolated case or if its a wider spread problem. I also tried it on another vehicle (Ford). I placed the cigarette adapter into my 12v in my car (Chevrolet) and all lights in the vehicle dimmed immediately for a quick second and then brightened back to normal. I tried the 2nd cigarette lighter outlet, same thing. This one it caused smoke. I wonder if the item was manufactured with backwards polarity; that the wiring was wired backwards with black to red and not black to black.
The packaging does not explicitly say that the charger works with the new iPod Classic, only that it works with "Ipod Video". Well it works just fine with the 160 GB Classic and saves you a bundle over ipod's more expensive car charger. It was made in China though, so be sure to keep young children from chewing on it :-) I just wish I could find stuff NOT made in China.
I had the previous version of this and it looks like it's been through a war.but it still charges my ipod like a champ. Very durable and works well. A must-have if you want to use your ipod on car trips.
